A test
render from the in-development animation |
Minder Inc are a company specialising in innovative
solutions for storage and organization. TMG CG Art is currently
involved in some work to create animations that will help illustrate
how some of their products work, to help bring them to life on the
web.
This project is work-in-progress, and information here will be
updated as work continues!

Modelling Work
TMG CG Art has undertaken some sample modelling for an undisclosed
client. Specific objects were required - some reference pictures
were provided, and 3D models created from those. The objects had
to be portable into other 3D packages (primarily 3DS Max, though
the .OBJ format was used to transfer the meshes).
The fact that the meshes were to be used in packages other than
trueSpace meant that extra care had to be taken with the geometry
of the objects, and only basic texturing (consisting of Phong shading
and some simple texture maps) was used. |
Renders of the gurney and “jaws
of life” meshes. These are set in blank scenes, solely for the purpose
of showing the mesh. Click either image to visit the relevant page in
the Gallery section which features larger versions of these and other
renders.
The first mesh, on the left, is a gurney, as used in ambulances and by
emergency crews, and based on a particular model. Since the reference
pictures did not provide all the detail, an internet search turned up
related makes of gurney, which were used to “improvise” some of the details.
The second object is the “jaws of life”, as used by fire crews and other
emergency / rescue worked, usually to free people from wreckage.
The brief was to create a relatively detailed and realistic looking meshes,
each within a deadline. The realism was only required to extend to the
overall visual appearance, rather than technical accuracy, and the objects
did not need to be designed to animate.

North Sea Platform Support Vessel,
“Far Service”
| This 3D model is of a North Sea Platform
Supply vessel, type UT 745, based on the actual vessel, the “Far
Service”. The model was created specifically to be put on sale,
and all modelling had to be done to meet a high standard of quality
control.
The model also had to be created in such
a way that it could be easily imported into any 3D package. This
required a lot of extra attention to the technical details of how
the model was constructed. |

The
same model in a finished scene, with cargo, and improved lighting
and textures. |
Finally, wewanted to achieve a high
level of detail and realism. Although done “by eye” rather than
using a strict CAD approach, the resulting model is instantly recognisable
as the “Far Service”.
You can view the model (and buy it) by visiting
Viewpoint, and searching for ID number VP2890. A larger version
of the finished scene shown above (which won an Honorable Mention
in Caligari’s November 2000 image contest) is also on show at my
Gallery . |

Pontoon Design Visualisation
/ Illustration

An illustrative
render of a pontoon design, to bring it to life based solely on provided
CAD images
The brief here was to create an illustrative render of a pontoon design,
in order to visualise it and bring in to life in a way which was more
dynamic than the currently existing CAD line and shaded drawings.
The CAD data was not used, but instead based on three or four CAD images,
the model was constructed and rendered as it might look in place on the
sea. A reasonable degree of detail and realism was required, although
the image was to remain illustrative in nature.
A larger version of the final render can be seen by clicking
here.

A CAD image
extracted from the AutoCAD DWG file provided by the client.
Such images were the sole source of information for constructing the final
render.
